Following a competitive tender process, the Dutch grid operator Alliander has selected Ependion’s business entity Westermo as its strategic partner for the digitalisation and secure communication of the power grid. Alliander is responsible for one of Europe’s largest energy infrastructures, with approximately six million connections, ranging from transformer substations to solar and wind installations that must be securely connected and controlled.
The decision is made against a backdrop of rapidly increasing cyber threats to critical infrastructure and growing geopolitical uncertainty, which has highlighted the risks associated with global and difficult-to-control supply chains. For Alliander, operational reliability, security of supply and cybersecurity are critical, making the supplier choice as much about risk reduction as about technology.
A decisive factor was Westermo’s EU-based research, development and manufacturing, combined with full control over both hardware and software. The solution is purpose-built for critical infrastructure, featuring robust and secure hardware for harsh environments and a secure, non-cloud-based management and control platform.
